Your focus
The highest level of decision-making development occurs when players can see a situation, analyze why a decision was right or wrong, and immediately try again. Freeze-debrief sessions accelerate decision-making learning more than any other method.
Play an 11v11 scrimmage on a full field.
Coach can freeze at any moment by blowing a whistle.
All players freeze in position. Coach identifies one player and asks: 'What are your 3 options right now?'
Player answers; team discusses for 60 seconds.
Game restarts from exactly the frozen position and plays out.
Coach compares what the player said with what actually happened.
Goal
It's working when the freeze moments reveal decisions that were actually correct, not just lucky outcomes, but reads you can explain and would repeat.
Helpful cues
- Every player should be asking themselves 'what are my options' on every touch
- Explain why you'd choose option 1 over option 2, the reason is the learning
- What would the best player in the world do here? And why?
