How it works
Attempt ambitious passes through lines and into tight spaces, rewarded for confident play regardless of outcome.
What you need
- cones
- soccer ball
- scrimmage vests
- goals
Your focus
Confidence in passing through pressure requires players to attempt balls they might not normally try. A scoring system that rewards the attempt teaches players that confident play , not safe, risk-averse play , is what creates goals at higher levels.
Play small-sided activity in a bounded space with goals.
Goals scored = 2 points.
A 'line-breaking pass' (through a defender into a forward's feet) = 1 point, regardless of what happens next.
A through ball resulting in a 1v1 chance = 2 bonus points.
A completed cross from the byline = 1 point.
Play 15 minutes; debrief confident plays, attempted vs. completed.
Helpful cues
- Reward yourself for trying the hard pass, not just completing the easy one
- Confidence means believing in your technique before you play it
- If you see it, play it. Don't wait for certainty.
