Your focus
Confidence in 1v1 situations is one of the most important qualities a forward or winger can have. Structuring 1v1s so players experience frequent success , not just frequent failure , builds the positive expectation needed to take on defenders in games.
Set up a 10x8 yard corridor with a mini goal at each end.
Attacker and defender begin at opposite ends; attacker has ball.
Attacker starts with a 3-second head start, defender counts before pursuing.
Attacker must attempt a skill move before shooting.
Track successful dribble attempts (completing the move, not just scoring).
10 attempts each; gradually reduce the head start as confidence grows.
Goal
You've got it when you commit to your skill move without slowing down first, you go at the defender at full speed, not half-speed testing the water.
Helpful cues
- Commit to the move, half-committed doesn't work
- Look at the defender's feet to decide your move
- Celebrate every good attempt, scored or not
