Legend

  • opponent
  • ball
  • mini goal

How it works

Practice maintaining composure and competitive effort after falling behind in a small-sided game.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests
  • mini goals

Your focus

Resilience is tested when things go wrong. Awarding bonus comeback points transforms the experience of being behind from demoralizing to motivating , teaching players that the game is never over and sustained effort is always rewarded.

1

Play a 4v4 game with mini goals. Team A starts with a 3-0 lead.

2

Normal scoring applies, but Team B (the trailing team) earns double points for each goal.

3

Team B also earns 1 bonus point for every 5-pass sequence during their comeback.

4

Game lasts 8 minutes. Team A must maintain composure while leading.

5

At the end, discuss how both teams felt: trailing team's resilience, leading team's composure.

6

Swap roles and play again.

Goal

You've got it when being down 2-0 doesn't change how hard you're playing, same sprint, same effort, same belief. The scoreboard is just information.

Helpful cues

  • Trailing team: one goal at a time, the gap shrinks one step at a time
  • Leading team: don't switch off, defending a lead requires resilience too
  • Your attitude when you're losing shows your true character
