How it works

Watch video review of a previous game, identify personal coaching points, and apply them in an immediate practice session.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests
  • goals

Your focus

Advanced coachability includes self-analysis. Players who can watch footage, identify their own errors, and self-correct without being told are self-coaching , the highest level of coachability and a prerequisite for elite performance.

1

Before practice, show a 5-minute video clip featuring each player's specific errors from the last game.

2

Each player writes down two things they want to correct.

3

During a 20-minute scrimmage, each player focuses on their two corrections.

4

Coach observes but does not give feedback during the first 10 minutes, players self-direct.

5

After 10 minutes, coach gives targeted feedback only if corrections are not being applied.

6

Post-session: players rate themselves 1-10 on how well they applied each correction.

Helpful cues

  • You saw the video, you know what to fix
  • Self-awareness without self-criticism, observe, correct, move on
  • The best players coach themselves between training sessions

Adjust the challenge
