Your focus
The ability to receive and implement in-game coaching is one of the most valuable qualities in a player. Freeze-frame coaching creates the habit of processing information quickly and acting on it without hesitation.
Play a 5v5 game in a 30x20 yard space.
Coach can freeze the game at any moment by blowing the whistle.
On freeze, coach addresses one player with a specific tactical instruction.
Game resumes from the exact frozen position.
Coach watches whether the player applies the instruction in the next 60 seconds.
Bonus point for the team if their player visibly applies the feedback.
Goal
You've got it when the play after the freeze looks noticeably different from the play before it, you applied what you heard, not just nodded and kept doing the same thing.
Helpful cues
- Stay exactly where you are when I freeze, that tells me you're thinking
- Ask a question if you didn't understand, that's smart, not weak
- Apply it in the next play, not tomorrow
