Agility & Change of Direction

How it works

Mirror a partner's movements in a confined grid while keeping close ball control.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests

Your focus

Reactive agility , changing direction in response to another player , is more game-realistic than cone-only drills. This exercise sharpens perceptual speed and teaches players to read visual cues while managing a ball.

1

Mark a 5x5 yard square with cones.

2

Two players face each other; one is the leader, one is the mirror.

3

Both have a ball. The leader moves freely within the grid, forward, back, left, right.

4

The mirror must replicate every movement while keeping their own ball under control.

5

Switch roles after 30 seconds.

6

Complete 4 rounds each.

Goal

It's clicking when you react to your partner's change of direction instantly, no extra step to recover, no losing the ball, and stay within arm's reach through each shift.

Helpful cues

  • Watch your partner's hips, not their feet
  • Short sharp steps to change direction
  • Keep your ball on the inside foot

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Perform without balls first, focusing purely on mirroring movement.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Increase the grid to 8x8 yards and add sprints, leader can accelerate to any corner.
