How it works

Dribble at speed through a star pattern, executing sharp cuts and accelerations between each cone.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball

Your focus

The star pattern requires cutting in five different directions, replicating the unpredictable directional demands of a match. Performing it at near-game speed builds the explosive hip and ankle strength needed for rapid pivots.

1

Place 5 cones in a star (pentagram) shape, each cone 5 yards from the center.

2

Place a ball at the center cone.

3

Sprint to cone 1, touch it, sprint back to center.

4

Continue to each cone in sequence (1→center→2→center→3 etc.) as fast as possible.

5

On the final return to center, collect ball and dribble to a finish line 10 yards away.

6

Time each run; rest 60 seconds between reps.

Goal

You've got it when every cut feels sharp and explosive, not rounded, and you arrive at each cone with the ball already set up for your next touch.

Helpful cues

  • Plant your outside foot hard before cutting
  • Drive your arms when you accelerate
  • Short touch before the sprint

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Remove the ball; perform the star pattern as an agility run only.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a defender who enters after the 3rd cone, player must dribble past them to the finish.
