Stick Checking

How it works

Execute a sequence of three different stick checks in under 10 seconds on a moving ball carrier.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • timer

Your focus

Game defending requires stringing together multiple check attempts in rapid succession during a single possession. Training a timed check sequence builds the speed, adaptability, and persistence needed in real defensive situations.

1

Ball carrier moves laterally within a 5-yard box.

2

Defender must execute one poke, one lift, and one slap check within 10 seconds.

3

All three checks must be legal (no body contact).

4

Timer calls the end of each sequence. Track whether the sequence is completed and if any check was illegal.

Goal

You're there when you execute all three checks cleanly in under 10 seconds on a moving target, speed and variety together, not just one at a time.

Helpful cues

  • Sequence means planning, know your second check before you throw your first
  • Quick reset between checks, don't over-commit to one attempt
  • Legal checks only: precise technique beats force every time

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Increase time to 15 seconds; ball carrier moves at half speed.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Ball carrier can dodge or spin during the sequence; defender must adjust mid-sequence.
