Poke Check Target
Stick Checking
Legend
- defender
- ball on cone
- poke-check extension
How it works
Practice the poke check motion by targeting a ball placed on a cone.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
- cone
Your focus
Isolating the poke check against a stationary target allows young players to develop the correct push-with-the-bottom-hand mechanics without the coordination challenge of a moving opponent.
Place a ball on top of a cone at knee height.
Player stands a stick-length away in a defensive stance.
Player extends the bottom hand forward to drive the stick tip into the ball, knocking it off the cone.
Repeat 10 times, then switch to the opposite hand on the stick.
Goal
You've got it when the stick tip hits the ball and not the cone, precision first, speed second.
Helpful cues
- Push with the bottom hand, that's your power on the poke check
- Aim for the bottom of the ball
- Don't lunge forward, push the stick, not your body
