How it works
Practice the lift check technique on a partner who is holding a stick in a stationary cradling position.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
Your focus
The lift check targets the ball carrier's bottom hand, dislodging the stick head up and loosening the cradle. Learning the lift check on a stationary partner first develops the correct stick path and wrist motion before adding movement.
Ball carrier holds stick in a stationary cradle position.
Defender approaches and inserts their stick head under the ball carrier's bottom hand.
Defender lifts sharply upward, disrupting the cradle.
Ball carrier resets; repeat 8 times, then switch roles.
Goal
It's working when the lift check moves the carrier's bottom hand upward, not a tap, but a real force that disrupts the cradle.
Helpful cues
- Insert your stick from below, never from the side
- Drive upward sharply, a slow lift won't work
- Left hand on your stick drives the lift, push with your bottom hand
