How it works
Learn the basic positions for a ride by walking into each assignment and naming what that rider's job is.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- cones
- goal
Your focus
Young players need to understand the ride as a team concept before they can execute it. Walking through positions and responsibilities creates the spatial vocabulary for learning pressure defense of the clear.
Coach sets up three offensive players (acting as riders) in a basic 1-2-2 ride formation.
A defensive clearing unit (goalie + two defenders) sets up in clearing positions.
Coach walks riders to their assignments one by one and explains: 'Your job is to cut off this lane.'
Walk through three ride attempts at walking pace.
Goal
You've got it when you can walk to your ride assignment and describe what you're trying to take away, lane, pass, or space.
Helpful cues
- Riders sprint to their assignments, never walk into a ride
- Your job is to cut off passing lanes, not to tackle anyone
- The point of riding is to make the clear difficult, pressure and lanes
