Ride and Break

Ride & Clear

15 minutesintermediateteamphysical

Legend

  • four riders
  • three clearing players
  • turnover ball
  • transition routes

How it works

Force a clearing turnover on the ride, then immediately transition to a fast break attack.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • cones
  • goal

Your focus

A ride is only complete when the turnover is converted into a scoring opportunity. Training the ride-to-fast-break transition develops the mental switch from defensive pressure to offensive opportunity that elite teams execute automatically.

1

4v3 ride (riders have more players) against a clearing unit.

2

When a rider forces a turnover, all riders immediately sprint to offense.

3

Rider with possession delivers an outlet pass and the team attacks 3v2.

4

If clear is completed, clearing unit gets a fast break the other way. Run 8 possessions.

Goal

Success is forcing a turnover on the ride and converting it into a fast break shot, the ride and the transition are one play, not two.

Helpful cues

  • Force the turnover with intent, you're hunting the ball, not just pressuring
  • Transition sprint is immediate: see the turnover, go to offense
  • Outlet fast, the clear unit's defense isn't set yet

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Clearing unit cannot forward pass; they must clear laterally only.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Riders are at a numbers disadvantage (3 riders vs. 4 clearing); must ride smarter.
