Your focus
Loss of focus after a mistake is one of the most common performance inhibitors in youth sports. Teaching a breathing reset protocol gives players a concrete tool to interrupt the distraction spiral and return to task focus.
Player runs a shooting drill. After each miss, player must stop, take 2 slow deep breaths, and say their focus cue aloud before the next shot.
Coach tracks whether the shot after the breathing reset is better than the missed shot.
Over 20 shots, compare accuracy of shots following the reset versus shots following a make.
Debrief: did the reset change focus and accuracy?
Helpful cues
- Breathe in for 4 counts, out for 4 counts, that's your reset
- Say your cue out loud, it commits your focus to it
- The shot after the reset is the most important shot, give it full attention
