How it works

Execute a roll dodge around a stationary cone, keeping the body between the cone and the stick throughout.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • cones
  • goal

Your focus

The roll dodge's key mechanics , planting, pivoting, protecting the stick with the body , are best learned against a predictable stationary object before applying them against a moving defender.

1

Set up cones in a line 5 yards apart, 10 yards from goal.

2

Player carries ball toward each cone, plants outside foot at the cone, pivots 180 degrees, and rolls around to continue toward goal.

3

Throughout the roll, the player keeps their body between the cone and the stick.

4

Execute from both left and right sides. Run 3 laps.

Goal

It's working when the roll dodge keeps your body between the cone and the stick throughout, shielding is what makes a roll dodge a roll dodge.

Helpful cues

  • Plant the outside foot and drop your shoulder into the roll
  • Keep the stick tight to your body through the pivot
  • Come out of the roll accelerating, don't slow down after the pivot
