How it works

Select and execute the correct dodge type based on a defender's position and stance.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • goal

Your focus

Elite dodgers do not pre-select their dodge. They read the defender and match the dodge to the defensive position. Training this read-then-dodge sequence eliminates predictability and maximizes success rate.

1

Defender takes one of three positions: playing the attacker straight up (split dodge cue), overplaying the strong hand (roll dodge cue), or giving cushion (bull dodge cue).

2

Attacker reads the position and selects the correct dodge before attacking.

3

Attacker declares their dodge to the coach before executing.

4

Coach evaluates the read and the execution. Run 10 reps with varied defender positions.

Goal

You're there when you read the defender correctly at least 4 out of 5 reps and choose the dodge that wins, not the one you're most comfortable with.

Helpful cues

  • Read the defender's feet and hips, they tell you the correct dodge
  • Declare it before you do it, that locks in your commitment
  • A well-read wrong dodge is better than a well-executed wrong read

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Defender holds a card with a dodge cue written on it to make reads explicit.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Defender can switch positions as the attacker approaches, requiring a mid-approach adjustment.
