How it works
Practice defensive communication by verbally calling slides before they happen in a 2v2 drill.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
- cones
- goal
Your focus
Defensive breakdowns often happen because slide calls are late or absent. Training players to communicate slide responsibilities before contact happens builds the communication habits elite defenses require.
Two defenders guard two attackers in the set distance apart.
When an attacker drives, the on-ball defender must call 'drive' and the help defender must call 'slide' before sliding over.
If no verbal call is made before the slide, the rep doesn't count.
Rotate all four players through both roles for 6 reps each.
Helpful cues
- Call 'slide' before you move, not while you're moving
- The on-ball defender's call triggers the slide, make it loud
- Communication is a team skill that requires both players to do their part
