How it works

Sustain defensive communication and teamwork during a short-player situation after a penalty.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • cones
  • goal
  • pinnies

Your focus

short-player defense is the ultimate test of communication and teamwork under stress. Every player's role shifts immediately, and without clear communication the unit breaks down. Training this scenario builds resilience and tactical teamwork.

1

Defensive team starts at full strength (small-sided activity) for 30 seconds.

2

Coach calls a penalty on a random defender who must sit out for 90 seconds.

3

Remaining five defenders must immediately reorganize and communicate their new coverage.

4

Offense presses the advantage. Track how many goals the defending group surrenders. Run 4 short-player scenarios.

Helpful cues

  • First 5 seconds of short-player are the most dangerous, communicate immediately
  • Identify the most dangerous player (most dangerous offensive player) and protect him first
  • All five defenders must know the rotation before the first pass is made

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Pause play for 10 seconds after penalty call to let defense reorganize.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Two penalties called back-to-back; defense goes to 4v6.
