How it works

Practice coachability by adapting to a position or role change during practice without resistance.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • cones
  • goal

Your focus

Coachability includes accepting role changes, new positions, and altered game plans without ego. Training players to embrace a role switch quickly and perform well in it is a direct test of their coachability.

1

Players are initially assigned positions for a 5v5 small-sided game.

2

At random intervals (every 3-5 minutes), coach reassigns two players to different roles (e.g., attacker becomes goalie, midfielder becomes defenseman).

3

Players must transition without complaint and immediately commit to their new role.

4

Post-drill: coach discusses how quickly each player adapted.

Goal

You've got it when you take the new role and execute the first rep without complaint or confusion, the adjustment happens in your mind during the instruction, not after you've already started wrong.

Helpful cues

  • Your job is to be the best player in whatever role you're given right now
  • Every position switch is an opportunity to understand your teammates better
  • A player who can only play one way limits their team
