Your focus
At the competitive level, teams need players who can absorb a new scheme quickly and execute it under pressure. This drill tests both listening comprehension and application speed , the definition of elite coachability.
Coach introduces a new defensive scheme (zone, slide package) or offensive motion in 3 minutes of whiteboard explanation.
Team runs one walk-through rep.
Team immediately plays a small-sided activity scrimmage using only the new concept.
Coach pauses to make one correction per team; teams regroup and continue. Run for 10 minutes.
Helpful cues
- You only get one walk-through, ask your questions now
- Trust the concept even when it feels uncomfortable
- Talk to your teammates constantly, shared understanding makes schemes work
