Your focus
Clearing is a fundamental team concept that young players need to understand early, even before executing it at full speed. Walking through the positions and passes builds spatial understanding of the field.
Place three players in clearing positions: goalie, one defender on each wing.
Coach gives ball to goalie.
Goalie calls a wing's name, walks to them, and delivers an underhand toss.
Wing catches, cradles, and carries the ball to midfield. Repeat with each wing.
Goal
You've got it when you can name each player's job in the clear and walk to your spot without being told where to go.
Helpful cues
- Goalie is the quarterback of the clear, you make the first decision
- Wings, when you hear your name, show your stick as a target
- Carry the ball up the sideline, not through the middle
