Your focus
The split dodge is the most effective individual move for a defender clearing the ball against a riding attacker. This drill isolates the dodge in a game-realistic scenario and trains the acceleration that makes it work.
Place a single cone 10 yards upfield as a simulated riding attacker.
Start at the defensive end line with the ball.
Carry toward the cone at 75% speed.
At 3 yards out, execute a split dodge, plant and change direction sharply.
Burst through the open lane to the midfield cone. 8 reps, alternating dodge direction.
Goal
You've got it when you beat the cone cleanly with a full dodge and drive to the midfield target on 6 of 8 reps.
Helpful cues
- Sell the fake direction, two steps toward the defender, then plant hard
- Low plant step, stay out of the lunge
- Burst for 3 full steps out of the dodge before relaxing
