How it works
Learn the poke check motion on a stationary ball placed on a cone.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
- cones
Your focus
Teaching the poke check in isolation allows young players to develop the correct wrist snap and extension mechanics without the coordination demand of a moving target.
Place a ball on top of a cone at waist height.
Player stands two stick-lengths away in a defensive stance.
Player extends the bottom hand and pokes the stick tip at the ball, knocking it off the cone.
Reset and repeat 10 times with each hand.
Goal
You've got it when the poke check motion hits the target, stick end on the ball, arm extension controlled, head stays up.
Helpful cues
- Push with your bottom hand, that's what drives the check
- Keep your feet still when you poke
- Aim at the bottom of the ball, not the top
