1v1 Checking Gauntlet

Checking

Legend

  • ball carrier
  • defender
  • cones
  • goal

How it works

Use a variety of stick checks in a contained 1v1 corridor to prevent a score.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • cones
  • goal

Your focus

The gauntlet format focuses checking practice within a limited space, forcing the defender to use checks rather than body position alone. This builds checking instincts under competitive pressure.

1

Set two cones 5 yards apart creating a 5x10 yard corridor toward goal.

2

Ball carrier starts at the back and tries to pass through the corridor and shoot.

3

Defender uses only stick checks (no body contact) to disrupt or dislodge the ball.

4

If the carrier exits the corridor, they get a free shot. Play 3-minute rounds.

Goal

Success is preventing a score while using at least two different check types, if you only used one tool the whole gauntlet, you haven't unlocked the drill yet.

Helpful cues

  • Read whether to poke or lift based on how they're cradling
  • One good check beats ten wild slashes
  • Stay between the ball and the goal even after a failed check

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Widen the corridor to 8 yards; carrier moves at half speed.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Narrow the corridor to 3 yards and allow the carrier to choose which end to exit.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
