How it works
Use a body seal technique to box out an opponent and secure a ground ball after delivering a check.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
- pads
Your focus
Effective body checking is incomplete without winning the loose ball. Teaching the seal-and-scoop sequence makes body checking purposeful and connects defensive physicality to possession outcomes.
Two players compete for a ball placed 10 yards away. They start side by side.
Coach calls 'go.' Both sprint for the ball.
The first player to reach the opponent's position may deliver a seal check (hip-to-hip body contact) to box them out.
Player scoops the ball and cradles away. Play 6 rounds.
Goal
Success is winning the ground ball after the check, the check isn't the finish, it's the setup. Ground ball secured means the sequence worked.
Helpful cues
- Beat your opponent to the spot, then seal with your hip
- Stay low through the seal, don't go upright
- Scoop through the ball in one motion after the seal
