How it works

Learn the basic concept of using body position to legally impede an opponent (no contact version).

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • cones

Your focus

At the youngest ages, body checking awareness is about positioning and body angle rather than contact. Teaching players to use their body as a barrier builds defensive instincts safely.

1

Players pair up. One is the ball carrier, one is the defender.

2

Ball carrier walks toward a cone goal. Defender must position their body between the ball carrier and the cone.

3

Defender uses only body position (no arms, no contact) to slow the ball carrier.

4

Switch roles after 4 repetitions each.

Goal

You've got it when you can get your body between the attacker and their path to goal without grabbing or shoving, position first, contact later.

Helpful cues

  • Get your body in front of the ball carrier's path
  • Stay low so you can move quickly
  • Don't reach, move your feet

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Ball carrier moves in slow motion only.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Ball carrier can juke left or right; defender must shadow them.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
