How it works
Reward effort and positive attitude by spotting and celebrating hustle moments during scrimmage.
What you need

Your focus
At early ages, intrinsic motivation is built by positive reinforcement of effort rather than outcome. Teaching young players to recognize hustle plays in others develops a team-first mindset from the start.
Run a small-sided 3v3 scrimmage for 5 minutes.
Coach watches for hustle plays: diving for a ground ball, sprinting back on defense, encouraging a teammate.
Stop play to verbally highlight each hustle moment.
After scrimmage, players share one hustle play they saw a teammate make.
Goal
You've got it when your hustle play gets noticed and called out, sprinting for a ball you probably won't win, helping a teammate who doesn't see it. That's the play.
Helpful cues
- Hustle means going as hard as you can right now
- Cheer for your teammates, their hustle helps the whole team
- It's okay to make a mistake if you're giving full effort
