How it works

Develop composure and positive attitude under competitive pressure when a player's team is losing.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • goal
  • cones

Your focus

Many young athletes' attitudes deteriorate when losing. This drill creates a controlled losing scenario and coaches players to maintain effort and positivity as a competitive skill in itself.

1

Play a 3v3 game to 5 goals. One team starts already down 0-3.

2

The losing team must verbally encourage each other after every goal (own or opponent's).

3

Coach awards a bonus point if the losing team scores three consecutive goals.

4

Debrief: discuss what it felt like and what attitude helped most.

Goal

Success is competing the same way on your sixth rep down as on your first rep up, if the losing team can't tell you know you're losing, your attitude is right.

Helpful cues

  • Your attitude is a choice, not a reaction
  • Encourage the person next to you, it lifts both of you
  • Focus on the next goal, not the scoreboard

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Start team down 0-2 instead of 0-3.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Play 4v3 (losing team is shorthanded) and must still maintain attitude.
