How it works
Develop resilience through repeated penalty kill scenarios where a power play goal is scored and the killers must immediately re-engage for the next kill.

Your focus
Allowing a power play goal is one of the most demoralizing moments in hockey, and the team's resilience in the next penalty kill often determines whether the deficit grows. Training penalty killers to re-engage immediately after conceding a power play goal builds the collective resilience needed to stabilize the game. Teams with high resilience on the penalty kill are significantly harder to put away.
Set up a penalty kill drill; coach's team scores a power play goal on the first kill.
Immediately without rest, the same penalty kill unit sets up for a second kill.
The second kill must start with each player making one positive statement or call.
Track success rate of the second kill versus the first, resilience should improve kill percentage.
Goal
Success is the penalty kill group responding immediately after a power play goal and holding firm on the next sequence.
Helpful cues
- The goal is gone, the next kill is everything
- Set up fast, communicate loud, don't let the goal linger
- Resilient teams kill the next penalty better because they refuse to let the last one define them
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Allow 30 seconds between the goal and the next kill setup, giving the group time to consciously reset.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Score two consecutive power play goals before the resilience reset, requiring the unit to bounce back from deeper adversity. No account needed
