How it works

Build early resilience by teaching young players to immediately continue play after a missed shot or skill error without any negative response.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice
  • net

Your focus

Resilience at age 6-9 is built by normalizing failure and immediate continuation. Young players who stop, sulk, or refuse to try again after a miss develop fragility that compounds with competitive pressure. Teaching the habit of instant continuation after an error lays the foundation for the resilient response needed in competitive play.

1

Players take turns shooting on an open net from close range.

2

When a player misses, coach immediately says 'keep going!' and passes them another ball.

3

Player must move immediately to retrieve the missed ball or take the new one and shoot again.

4

No negative reactions from coach or teammates are allowed, only forward momentum language.

Helpful cues

  • Miss happens, what you do next is what matters
  • Your next shot is always more important than the last one
  • Resilience means you skate harder after a miss, not slower

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use an extra-large net to increase success rates while building the keep-going habit.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a second miss intentionally (coach deflects the shot) before the player gets a clean success, resilience through compounded adversity.
