Your focus
Being scored on in a crucial moment is the ultimate resilience test in hockey , the natural response is deflation, and the resilient response is immediate re-engagement. Training this specific scenario at a young age builds the emotional skill to process a negative outcome quickly and redirect energy into the next play. Players who are resilient after being scored on are invaluable in close games.
Set up a 1-on-1 sudden death overtime scenario with a goalie.
Player takes the breakaway; goalie makes the save and simulates a goal for the other team.
Player must immediately state one positive self-talk phrase, then take a second breakaway 20 seconds later.
Evaluate: did the second attempt show more effort and quality than the first?
Goal
You've got it when getting scored on doesn't slow your next response, you're back in position and competing again within seconds.
Helpful cues
- The score doesn't define your next effort, you do
- Between the first and second attempt, your mindset resets completely
- Resilience is visible in your body language between attempts
