How it works

Develop elite resilience by running a scrimmage that deliberately engineers multiple consecutive adverse events and requires players to maintain performance quality through each one.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice
  • goalie

Your focus

Resilience at the competitive level is not just about recovering from one bad moment , it is about sustaining performance through a sequence of adverse events without allowing each one to compound the previous. Training through a deliberate adversity sequence builds the mental toughness to stay in the game when circumstances are conspiring against the team. This drill replicates the conditions of playoff hockey.

1

Run a scrimmage; coach engineers adverse events in sequence: a disallowed goal, a phantom penalty, a favorable bounce for the other team.

2

Players must maintain compete level and communication through all three adverse events without coach prompting.

3

After the three-event sequence, evaluate: did the team's play level hold or drop?

4

Teams who held their level through adversity earn 3 extra minutes of scrimmage; teams who dropped run conditioning.

Helpful cues

  • Adversity is a test, your response is your grade
  • One bad event does not cause the next one, only your reaction does
  • The most resilient team in this scrimmage is the one playing hardest in the final minute

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Engineer only one adverse event and debrief before resuming, building resilience response one step at a time.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a fourth adverse event without any debrief between them, pure resilience under compounded and unprocessed adversity.
