How it works
Skate through neutral zone positioning, learning where to be as the third forward or defensive forward.
What you need
- cones
Your focus
The neutral zone is where games are won and lost in hockey. Understanding where to be as a third forward or supporting defender , and skating there automatically , creates turnovers and prevents odd-player rushes.
Mark 4 neutral zone positions with cones, both dots and both half-wall positions.
Skate the activation pattern: start at dot 1, skate to half-wall right, dot 2, half-wall left.
Complete 5 circuits at skating pace.
On each arrival, pause and call out your role (support, pressure, or cover).
Final 3 circuits: full speed.
Goal
You've got it when all 5 full-speed circuits are completed with correct role names called at every position.
Helpful cues
- Support, don't follow, skate to where the play is going, not where it is
- Check over your shoulder every time you move to a new position
- Name your role out loud, ownership builds awareness
