How it works

Develop correct offensive zone positioning by establishing and maintaining a triangle formation that creates passing angles and scoring threats.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • cones
  • ice

Your focus

The triangle is the most efficient offensive zone formation because it creates passing options in all directions and maximizes coverage of high-danger areas. Teaching players to find and hold their triangle position builds the spatial awareness that prevents over-crowding and enables team offense to function effectively. Players who understand triangles naturally create more scoring chances.

1

Set up 3 forward positions with cones: net-front, right wing, left wing in a triangle.

2

Coach passes to any player; that player controls the puck while others skate to triangle positions.

3

Players cycle through passing in the triangle for 30 seconds; goal is to maintain the triangle despite movement.

4

Finish each rep with a shot on net.

Goal

You're there when all three players in the triangle stay spread out and at the right distance even as the puck moves around.

Helpful cues

  • Find the open corner of the triangle, fill the space
  • The triangle only works if all three players are in position
  • Move when the puck moves, don't stand still waiting for a pass

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use stationary players for the first 5 reps, show the shape before adding movement.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add two defenders who try to collapse the triangle, requiring the offense to readjust positioning in real time.
