How it works

Practice active listening and immediate instruction-following through a relay drill that changes on each coach command.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • cones
  • ice

Your focus

Coachability starts with the ability to listen, process, and apply instruction quickly. At young ages, the habit of following directions precisely during drills directly shapes how players receive feedback throughout their careers. Making listening feel like a game keeps young players engaged while building the attention and compliance that make coaching effective.

1

Players line up at the goal line.

2

Coach calls out a specific movement ('forward move,' 'backward move,' 'stop,' 'crossovers') before each player starts.

3

Player must perform exactly the called movement to the boundary line, not the one before or after.

4

Rotate through 6 rounds, changing the command each time; praise players who listen precisely.

Helpful cues

  • Freeze and listen before you go
  • If you don't hear it, ask, don't guess
  • Doing it right is more important than doing it fast

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use only two commands (forward and stop) to reduce the listening load

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Call two commands in sequence ('forward to the red, then crossovers to the blue') requiring multi-step instruction retention

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
