How it works

Build coachability by training players to receive a technical correction and apply it on the very next repetition.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

The gap between receiving feedback and applying it is where coachability lives. Players who nod at corrections but don't implement them cost their teams development time. Structuring the drill so the next rep immediately follows feedback creates a direct practice loop that builds the habit of rapid application.

1

Players practice a stationary passing drill in pairs.

2

After every 3 passes, coach stops one player and gives a specific, single technical correction ('shift your bottom hand down,' 'follow through to your partner's chest').

3

Player must immediately perform the next 3 passes attempting to implement the correction.

4

Coach acknowledges improvement and moves to the next pair.

Helpful cues

  • One correction at a time, make that change right now
  • Don't defend the mistake, fix it
  • Say it back to me so I know you heard it

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach demonstrates the correction physically before the player attempts it

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Coach gives correction mid-drill without stopping; player must apply while maintaining drill flow

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
