Decision Making

How it works

Train the QB to identify zone coverage gaps and make the correct throw decision to exploit the soft spot in the defense.

What you need

  • football
  • flags
  • cones

Your focus

Zone coverage requires QBs to identify seams and voids rather than finding the open individual receiver. Decision making against zone is fundamentally different from player-to-player coverage reads and must be practiced specifically. QBs who can consistently identify and attack zone gaps are the most valuable players in flag football.

1

Defense sets up in a 3-deep zone with clear gaps between coverage zones.

2

QB drops back and surveys; must identify the gap between the zone defenders and point to it pre-throw.

3

QB throws to the receiver settling in that zone gap; grade both the identification and the accuracy of the throw.

4

Run 8 reps with the zone rotating coverage responsibility so different gaps open on each snap.

Goal

You've got it when you identify the zone gap and hit the receiver in the soft spot, not the tight coverage, the opening.

Helpful cues

  • Throw to the gap, not to the receiver running through it, anticipate
  • Zone defenders turn their back, that's your window
  • Point to where you're going before you throw it

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach pre-identifies the gap by placing a cone in the soft spot before each rep.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Defense mixes man and zone on alternate reps without signaling which is which, QB must read and decide.
