Your focus
Pre-snap run vs. pass reads are foundational QB decisions that determine the success of an entire play before the ball is snapped. Teaching players to read defensive alignment teaches pattern recognition that accelerates decision speed. QBs who make correct pre-snap decisions reduce the mental load required post-snap.
Coach sets up the defense in two pre-defined alignments: 'run-stuffed' (defenders crowding the line) and 'pass-open' (defenders in coverage depth).
QB surveys the defense pre-snap and calls either 'Run!' or 'Pass!' based on what they see.
Coach confirms the correct read; QB executes the corresponding play.
Run 10 reps mixing the two alignments; track QB accuracy on reads.
Goal
You're there when you correctly identify run or pass advantage before the snap and call the right play, not guessing, reading.
Helpful cues
- Read the defense before your first step, not after
- Crowded line means run it; deep coverage means pass it
- Your read sets up the whole play
