How it works
Train intermediate QBs to work through a three-receiver progression, moving off the first read and finding the open receiver down the field.
What you need
- football
- flags
- cones
Your focus
Most intermediate flag football QBs force passes to their first read regardless of coverage. Learning to move through a progression teaches the QB to be patient yet decisive. A QB who can consistently find the second or third receiver in progression is significantly harder for any zone defense to contain.
Set three receivers in positions 1 (short), 2 (mid), and 3 (deep); defenders cover one receiver at a time on each snap.
QB starts with eyes on receiver 1; if covered, moves to receiver 2; if covered, delivers to receiver 3.
QB has a 4-second window to complete the progression and throw.
Run 10 reps varying which receiver is covered; grade speed and accuracy of the progression.
Goal
Success is moving off your first read when they're covered and finding the open receiver further in the progression, not forcing it.
Helpful cues
- Read 1-2-3 quickly, don't stare at one
- Your eyes move before your feet
- If #1 is covered, trust #2, don't go back to #1
