How it works
Introduce basic decision making by having the QB choose between two clearly open receivers on each play.

Your focus
Beginning decision makers need clear, binary choices before progressing to complex reads. Two-receiver options teach the QB to look and choose rather than throwing to a pre-determined target. Success with simple decisions builds the cognitive confidence needed for more advanced reads.
Set up two receivers 5 yards apart in a Y shape; one receiver has a defender guarding them, one is open.
QB surveys the two options and throws to the open receiver within 3 seconds.
Coach confirms the decision aloud: 'Correct, number 12 was open, good read!'
Rotate defenders and receivers; run 8 reps with varying open/covered combinations.
Goal
You've got it when you throw to the open receiver every single time, the covered one never gets it when a better option exists.
Helpful cues
- Look at both receivers before you throw
- Throw to the open one, not the favorite one
- Eyes first, then arm
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Open receiver waves their hand to signal availability, reducing the visual read required.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Both receivers initially appear open; defender moves to close coverage at the last second, requiring an updated read.No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
