How it works

Develop QB decision-making by identifying player-to-player versus zone coverage from the defensive alignment and selecting the correct route concept for each.

What you need

  • football
  • flags
  • cones

Your focus

player-to-player vs. zone identification is the central decision-making skill of any flag football QB. Different coverages require entirely different route attacks , knowing which one is present before the snap prevents forced throws and turnovers. Building this recognition habit at the beginner level of the 10-13 age group prepares players for full coverage reads.

1

Defense lines up in either player-to-player (each defender attached to a receiver) or pure zone (defenders aligned by area).

2

QB gets 5 seconds pre-snap to identify the coverage type and call it aloud.

3

QB then selects and executes the pre-designated play for that coverage (run concept vs. man, seam route vs. zone).

4

Run 10 reps; grade both identification accuracy and play selection correctness.

Goal

You're there when you read player-to-player versus zone before the snap and choose the right route concept to attack it.

Helpful cues

  • player-to-player coverage: defenders are attached to your receivers, they'll follow
  • Zone: defenders are looking at the QB, not attached to a receiver
  • Read it, name it, attack it

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach signals coverage type with a hand gesture so the QB can focus on play selection first.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Defense disguises zone as man (showing man pre-snap, rotating post-snap), QB must adjust the decision mid-play.
