How it works

Train QB and receivers to communicate a hot route change at the line of scrimmage when a blitz is identified.

What you need

  • football
  • flags
  • cones

Your focus

Identifying a blitz pre-snap and communicating a hot route change is an intermediate communication skill that prevents sacks and creates easy completions. The QB-receiver communication loop must be fast, clear, and mutually confirmed before the snap. Practicing this under time pressure builds reliable game-speed communication habits.

1

Set up a 3v3 flag football rep with a defense that will blitz on 50% of snaps (predetermined by a coach card).

2

QB surveys the defense pre-snap; if a blitz look is present, QB makes a hot route signal (tap the helmet twice).

3

The intended receiver must respond with a nod confirming they saw the signal and know the adjusted route.

4

Snap the ball and run the play; score a 'communication point' if the hot route was correctly signaled, confirmed, and executed.

Goal

You've got it when the QB and receiver both signal the hot route adjustment at the line and execute it correctly, no miscommunication.

Helpful cues

  • Make the signal big and clear, no ambiguity
  • Receivers: eye contact with the QB before every snap
  • One clear nod means you got it, two questions means something broke down

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Predetermine the blitz so both sides know it's coming, practice the communication ritual without pressure.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Defense disguises the blitz until after the signal, QB must react and re-signal if wrong.
