Your focus
Defensive communication in flag football starts before the snap , players who identify threats and call adjustments eliminate defensive breakdowns. Building the habit of verbal confirmation among defenders increases coverage consistency. Teams with organized defensive communication allow fewer big plays.
Set up an offense in a static formation; three defenders line up and have 10 seconds to call out their assignments aloud.
The defensive captain calls the coverage type ('Zone 2, corner take the out, safety deep center'), and other defenders repeat their individual assignment.
Snap the ball and run the play; coach evaluates whether each defender executed their called assignment.
Rotate the captain role and change the offensive formation between each rep.
Helpful cues
- Call it before the snap, not during the play
- If you didn't hear the call, ask immediately
- Your assignment stays the same until the captain calls a change
