Your focus
Communication breaks down most often in high-stakes moments , championship-level communication must be practiced, not assumed. This drill replicates the full game environment where both sides are communicating adjustments simultaneously. Teams that execute complete communication cycles under pressure make fewer mental errors in actual championship situations.
Run a 5v5 live scrimmage with both offense and defense required to verbalize or signal every assignment before each snap.
Coach grades each unit's communication on a play-by-play basis (1 point = complete pre-snap communication, 0 = any silent or missed assignment).
After 8 plays, each unit identifies and presents their two biggest communication breakdowns to the group.
Run 4 more plays with the identified breakdowns specifically addressed, compare communication scores.
Goal
Success is the full drive running without a coverage breakdown or missed assignment, everyone communicated and executed.
Helpful cues
- Communication is a skill that must be practiced deliberately
- Silent teams make mental errors, loud teams make physical ones
- Own your communication breakdown before blaming a result
