Your focus
Effective evasion in flag football requires reading the defender, not just executing a pre-planned move. Teaching players to make cut decisions based on the defender's angle builds the game-intelligence needed in open field. This drill bridges the gap between isolated skill practice and live decision-making.
Set two cones as gates 3 yards apart with a ball carrier starting 5 yards back and a passive defender in front.
The defender leans or steps toward one gate just before the carrier arrives, telegraphing their choice.
Carrier reads the lean and cuts through the OPPOSITE gate using a juke, spin, or stutter step.
After the gate, sprint 5 yards to a finish cone. Run 6 reps with the defender varying their lean.
Goal
Success is reading the defender's angle and cutting the right direction, not 50/50 guessing, actually reading where they're going.
Helpful cues
- Watch the defender's hips, not their eyes
- Commit to your read, hesitation loses yardage
- Explode through the open gate
