How it works

Teach young players the basic juke step move to evade a defender and protect their flags.

What you need

  • football
  • flags
  • cones

Your focus

The juke step is the foundational evasion skill in flag football since there is no contact-based blocking. Learning to fake one direction and cut the other creates the habit of using body fakes instead of power. Young players who develop this skill early are more confident ball carriers.

1

Stand facing a stationary cone 'defender' 3 yards away, ball tucked under one arm, flags attached.

2

Player approaches the cone, fakes right by dipping the shoulder and head right, then plants and cuts sharply left.

3

Sprint 5 yards past the cone after the cut.

4

Run 4 reps cutting left after a right fake, then 4 reps cutting right after a left fake.

Goal

You've got it when your juke step makes the person watching think you went one way before you went the other.

Helpful cues

  • Sell the fake, dip your head and shoulder
  • One hard plant step before you cut
  • Sprint away after the cut, don't slow down

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use a slow jog to the cone and practice the fake at walking speed first.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Replace the cone with a passive defender who mirrors the carrier's fake.
