How it works

Develop elite close-control stick and ball skills in very tight spaces to simulate the demands of dribbling through a press.

What you need

  • field hockey stick
  • field hockey ball
  • cones

Your focus

Modern field hockey is played in progressively tighter spaces at higher levels. Players who can maintain close control through tight congestion are nearly impossible to dispossess. Tight-space training builds the subtle wrist and body movements needed for elite control.

1

Create a 3x3-yard box; player works with ball inside the box for 30 seconds.

2

Execute rapid direction changes, Indian dribbles, and reverse stick touches without the ball leaving the box.

3

Rest 15 seconds; repeat 6 times.

4

Track the longest unbroken sequence within the box across attempts.

Goal

You've got it when you complete the tight-space course without bumping the markers, tight, precise, controlled movement.

Helpful cues

  • Micro-touches, the ball must stay under your stick
  • Change direction when you feel pressure, not after
  • Use the whole box, all four corners

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Expand to a 5x5-yard box.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a defender trying to win the ball from inside the box.
