How it works
Introduce 3D ball control skills (lifting the ball off the ground) by practicing ball lifts and aerial touches in a circuit.
What you need
- field hockey stick
- field hockey ball
- mini hurdles
Your focus
3D skills are among the most advanced stick and ball control techniques and are increasingly required at higher levels of field hockey. Early introduction allows players more years to develop the nuanced touch required. Players with 3D skills are nearly impossible to defend cleanly.
Station 1: lift ball over a flat obstacle using the stick face.
Station 2: control a bounced ball from a partner using the stick face.
Station 3: juggle the ball 5 times on the stick face.
Complete the circuit 4 times; track improvement on each station.
Goal
Success is lifting the ball cleanly at least twice in the circuit, it goes up, you catch it, you keep moving.
Helpful cues
- Cup the ball, scoop the stick face under it
- Keep your wrists soft for 3D touches
- Height and control, not just height
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Lower the obstacle height; use a larger ball.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
String all three stations into a continuous sequence without stopping. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
