How it works
Introduce the Indian dribble (side-to-side ball movement) as a basic stick and ball control technique.
What you need
- field hockey stick
- field hockey ball
- cones
Your focus
The Indian dribble is the signature technique of field hockey and the foundation of advanced stick and ball control. Learning the alternating forehand-backhand push motion develops wrist flexibility and stick manipulation from the earliest age. Players who master the Indian dribble have a significant advantage in tight spaces.
Players stand stationary with ball in front of them.
Push ball gently to the right with the forehand, then left with the backhand, repeat continuously.
Progress to walking forward while maintaining the side-to-side movement.
Dribble through 5 cones while maintaining the Indian dribble pattern.
Goal
You've got it when the ball moves side to side in the Indian dribble without rolling away, controlled, rhythmic, consistent.
Helpful cues
- Right-left-right-left, keep a rhythm
- Keep the ball close to the stick, tiny pushes
- Stay low in your hips as you move
