How it works
Introduce shooting by teaching young players the basic hit technique aimed at a large goal from close range.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- goal
- cones (for variations)
Your focus
Scoring goals is the most exciting moment in field hockey and early success builds love for the game. Close-range hitting from a stationary position allows focus on technique before adding distance or pressure. Frequent goal-scoring opportunities build confidence and joy.
Set up balls 10 yards from the goal.
Coach demonstrates the basic hit: feet set, swing through the ball, follow through.
Players take turns hitting; coach gives one tip to each player.
Celebrate every goal loudly; 10 attempts each.
Goal
You've got it when the ball hits the backboard or net, a real hit, not a tap, from within comfortable range.
Helpful cues
- Swing all the way through
- Look at the ball when you hit it
- Aim for the biggest part of the goal first
